Last Saturday morning I saw 20 patients. By 12:20 p.m. I had every visit documented using the NextGen EMR system. This was not possible when we had a traditional paper-based chart. "Three years ago we decided to take a good look at our website. We realized we were not utilizing it fully nor were we making any commitments to keep the information on the site up to date. We decided we had an obligation to our patients and potential patients to make information available to them. We wanted them to be able to access our site and answer any questions that they may have on their own prior to making appointments. Phone numbers and addresses need to be readily available as well as maps to each of our locations. Information about our physicians was placed on the site as well as pictures of the physicians and facilities that they operate out of. We have placed links to various local hospitals, insurance companies, and educational sites for patients with questions on specific issues such as kidney stones and different types of urologic cancers. MMIC was excellent in helping us change our look, setting up our intranet site for the staff, and teaching us how to do the basics for maintaining our website. They sat down with us and listened to our needs. They brought back ideas that met our needs and allowed for future growth of the site. We have expanded our website so that patients can now fill out certain forms online prior to their appointment. This saves time and money as we no longer mail forms if the patient has internet access. We now have employment applications, patient referral online forms, and forms specific to patients who are currently being treated for issues such as prostate cancer all online. We have a implanted a monthly feature article on current issues. We currently use our company intranet site for all newsletters, our staff directory (this is a favorite for all new staff members), and most of our forms. We just reviewed our total expenses for the past year and by utilizing the website for forms we saved about $6,000.00. We no longer print policy and employee manuals, we have all our human resource forms available on the website and other departmental forms."
