WHO Guidelines on Surgical Site Infections

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the Global Guidelines for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infection to address the issues of surgical site infections (SSI). Health care-associated infections (HAI) are acquired by patients while receiving care and represent the most frequent adverse event affecting patient safety worldwide. In the United States, SSI contribute to patients spending more than 400 000 extra days in hospital at a cost of an additional $10 billion per year.


HHS Buprenorphine training for NPs and PAs

In a press release, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it is taking steps to address the U.S. opioid epidemic by further expanding access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders. Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this step enables nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to immediately begin taking the 24 hours of required training to prescribe the opioid use disorder treatment, buprenorphine.

Antibiotics Awareness Week November 14-20

Get Smart About Antibiotics Week is an annual one-week observance to raise awareness of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic prescribing and use. The observance is a key component of CDC’s efforts to improve antibiotic stewardship in communities and health care facilities. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections.
