Diversion programs

Physicians and other health care providers, like anyone else, are susceptible to substance, mental health and medical disorders. Left untreated, these problems can put patients at risk. If you believe your performance may be impaired, consider self-referral to your state’s diversion program.

These programs provide confidential help for illnesses and aim to protect patients and promote recovery so participants may safely return to practice. Although each state’s program is different, most make referrals to treatment programs and provide active, long-term monitoring. Successful completion of the program usually allows the licensed professional to be diverted from the disciplinary track of the licensing board.
